Real Streets, Real Stunts: How Brand New Day Was Actually Made
Tom Holland said it himself before filming began: “Now, we’re really gonna lean into that old-school filmmaking and shoot in real locations, which is why we’re starting in Glasgow and we’re gonna use the streets of Glasgow to build this massive set-piece.”
Nearly 60 streets in Glasgow shut down for production. The city basically handed over its city centre to Spider-Man for weeks. Tom Holland wasn’t just standing there watching. He doing the stunts. On September 19, 2025, he took a hit during a stunt at Pinewood Studios and ended up in hospital with a mild concussion. He warns Peter to “stay out of his way.” Here’s the detail most people missed: Scorpion might not even be after Spider-Man primarily.
Gargan has his own agenda. Set photos from Glasgow confirmed he gets broken out of prison during the film’s events. Someone freed him. That someone clearly wants him causing chaos and Spider-Man just happens to be in the way.
In the comics, Mac Gargan’s origin connects to experimentation that drove him genuinely insane. A private investigator hired by J. Jonah Jameson to find out how Peter Parker always got Spider-Man photos. Jameson then paid for a procedure that gave Gargan superhuman strength and scorpion-like abilities but also wrecked his mind.

Sadie Sink as Jean Grey: The Mind-Hopper Hiding in Plain Sight
Marvel kept Sadie Sink’s character completely secret for over a year. No name in any casting announcement. No face in the trailer. Just glimpses a green jacket, red hair, metal restraints around her wrists, and powers that look nothing like anything we’ve seen in the MCU before.

Sink’s character is being held in a Department of Damage Control facility. She’s strapped to a chair. She’s being monitored as a mutant threat. She’s controlling people’s minds from inside that room a shot in the trailer shows an elderly woman driving a DODC tank through the streets, clearly not doing it voluntarily. Jean can mind-hop. She gets inside someone’s head and drives them like a vehicle.
Insider Daniel Richtman reported that her telepathic abilities are what trigger Bruce Banner’s transformation back into the Savage Hulk. Not anger. Not a fight. Jean accidentally or Knowingly reaches into Banner’s mind and pulls out the thing he’s spent years suppressing. The Hulk comes back because a scared, caged mutant girl panicked.
On set in Glasgow, Sink was spotted wearing green and yellow Jean Grey’s classic Marvel Girl colors. Reports also describe her as “time displaced” possibly from an alternate universe, which fits perfectly with the Multiverse Saga wrapping up around her introduction.
Scooper Cryptic HD QUALITY described her powers as having “new visual flair” that resembles her X-97 counterpart from the animated series. More VFX-heavy than telepathy usually looks. Something that makes her presence visible on screen.
She’s third billing in the credits. This is not a cameo. Jean Grey is a major character in Brand New Day the first mutant introduced into the 616 MCU as an active participant in the main story. She’s already confirmed to return in Avengers: Secret Wars. The Mutant Saga starts July 31, 2026.
The Grey Hulk (Joe Fixit) Surprise: Nobody Saw This Coming
The Hulk was not always green. In The Incredible Hulk #1 from 1962, Stan Lee intended him to be grey. Colorist Stan Goldberg couldn’t keep the grey consistent across the pages it kept printing differently. So from issue #2, they switched to green and never looked back.

A calculated, self-serving gangster with Hulk’s strength and Banner’s cunning. He wore suits. He made deals. He was terrifying in a completely different way. Brand New Day appears to be finally putting Joe Fixit in the MCU.
Official Hasbro merchandise for the film includes a figure called the “Savage Smash Hulk” and a “Savage Hulk Talk’n Electronic Mask.” Leaked merch images showed a grey-skinned Hulk variant. A set video from Glasgow shows Banner lying disoriented on a stretcher, surrounded by Damage Control agents, clearly not remembering what just happened to him.
That’s not Smart Hulk behaviour. Smart Hulk is in control. This Banner doesn’t know where he is. The rumoured plot says Jean Grey’s telepathy accidentally reaches into Banner’s mind while she’s panicking in her cell. She pulls out the thing he’s spent years suppressing. Banner’s inhibitor device introduced in Shang-Chi, used to suppress gamma radiation and keep him in human form gets overwhelmed.
Something older and angrier than Smart Hulk claws its way back out. The MCU’s version appears to blend Joe Fixit’s calculating nature with Savage Hulk’s destructive rage. An out-of-control, grey-skinned monster rampaging through New York while Spider-Man and the Punisher try to stop him from killing people.
Banner starts this film as a professor at Empire State University, quietly mentoring Peter on his mutation. He ends up becoming the crisis Peter has to survive alongside everything else.
Two men losing control of their own bodies at the same time. Peter mutating into something less human. Banner reverting into something he thought he’d buried. That’s not just a plot point. That’s the whole movie’s theme wearing a giant grey monster’s face.
The Neogenic Nightmare: Peter Parker's Mutation Horror Explained
Tom Holland used one word to describe Peter’s transformation in Brand New Day. “Catastrophic” Not “challenging & complicated.” The trailer confirms it. Peter wakes up in his apartment and it’s full of cobwebs he made in his sleep. He’s wrapping himself in a cocoon on the side of a building. Organic webbing fires from bare wrists.
His senses are so sharp that a single drip of water hitting the floor overwhelms him completely. This is the Neogenic Nightmare the most beloved arc from the 1990s Spider-Man animated series, finally getting a live-action MCU adaptation 30 years later.
In the original 1995 cartoon, Peter’s DNA doesn’t stop mutating after the spider bite. It keeps going. He emergs extra arms. He grows into a creature that’s more spider than man multiple eyes, fangs, the works. They called it Man-Spider. It was genuinely disturbing content for a kids’ show.
The comics version from 1971, The Six Arms Saga had Peter try to cure himself of his powers by drinking a self-made serum. Instead of removing his abilities, it accelerates the mutation. He wakes up with four extra arms. Brand New Day is pulling from both.
Bruce Banner in this film fills the role that Dr. Curt Connors played in the animated series the scientist who tries to help Peter understand and stabilise what’s happening to his body. Banner even says it out loud in the trailer: “If DNA is mutating, that would be enormously dangerous.”
The trailer shows Peter smashing through a water tower because he misjudged his own strength. His senses surrounding him in normal situations. He’s becoming a better Spider-Man and a less stable human being at the same time.
How strong is spider man in this version? Stronger than he’s ever been. And exactly the problem, his body is upgrading itself in ways he cannot control, and if it doesn’t stop, the upgrade kills him. Banner builds a serum to try to fix it. The question is whether it works and what breaks loose while they’re still trying to figure it out.
The Snow Fight and the Soundtrack Nobody's Talking About
There’s a featurette Sony released called “Snow Fight.” Two words. No context and explanation. Just these two words are a behind-the-scenes clip that showed Holland suited up in cold weather on what looked like a rooftop covered in snow.
The snow fight sequence appears to be one of the film’s major set pieces separate from the Glasgow street tank chase, separate from the Hand ninja battle, separate from the Scorpion confrontation. It’s a standalone action scene set in winter conditions, and based on the featurette footage, it involves Spider-Man fighting multiple opponents outdoors in near-blizzard conditions.
Why does this matter? Because fighting in the snow changes everything about how Spider-Man moves. Webs don’t anchor the same way. Surfaces are slippery. His organic webbing now firing from bare wrists would behave differently in freezing temperatures. A scene that’s been specifically named and teased by Sony tells you they’re proud of it. They’re not naming throwaway moments.
The Jackie Chan Stunt Team coordinated all the fights. This is the same team that made Shang-Chi’s bus and bamboo scaffolding sequences genuinely breathtaking to watch. They don’t do simple. A snow fight with that team involved is going to be worth every second.
Michael Giacchino returns for his fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man film. That’s not just a stat. Giacchino is the only composer in history to score an entire Spider-Man trilogy for one studio. His theme from Homecoming built on the word “Spider-Man” tapped out in morse code is one of the most clever musical constructions in superhero cinema.
For Brand New Day, Giacchino is building something tonally darker. The Day One set video from August 2025 already played his track “Arachnoventure” the piece from No Way Home’s final moments when Peter swings away alone into the city. Using that specific track at the very start of production wasn’t random. That’s Cretton and Giacchino saying: this film begins exactly where No Way Home ended, emotionally.
The final trailer also used Giacchino’s MCU Spider-Man theme alongside John Williams’ classic motifs from the original films. That layering is intentional. Brand New Day is a bridge between the old Spider-Man films kids grew up with and whatever comes next.
The full score is unreleased. But what we’ve heard already sounds quieter and more personal than anything Giacchino wrote for the previous three films. Less triumph. More weight.
Black Cat and Miles Morales Easter Eggs: What's Already Hidden in the Trailer
In one shot of the trailer, a figure in a dark jacket with gloves approaches Peter’s apartment from a strange angle. The body language is too confident and too deliberate to be a background extra. Multiple breakdown analysts including Cinelinx’s shot-by-shot analysis flagged it as potentially Felicia Hardy.
Black Cat is a long-overdue character in the MCU live-action universe and would fit naturally into a street-level film involving the Hand, Tombstone, and organised crime networks. She’s also confirmed to appear in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the animated film releasing in 2027. If Marvel is setting her up in that animated film, introducing a live-action version in Brand New Day first would make complete sense.
Miles Morales is the second name. He’s never officially appeared in the MCU live-action universe. But the Brand New Day trailer opens with a visual shot pulled almost directly from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Peter sitting on a beam high above New York, in a composition almost identical to Miles and Gwen’s famous scene.
This is not a coincidence. That’s a wink. Sony confirmed at CinemaCon 2026 that Miles Morales appears in Beyond the Spider-Verse promotional material alongside Brand New Day posters. The two films are being positioned as companion pieces one animated, one live-action arriving in the same twelve-month window.

Brand New Day’s trailer lines about “rebirth” and spider “lifecycles” sound exactly like something the Jackal would say. Scorpion, Tarantula, and Punisher were all used as pawns by the Jackal in the original Clone Saga. Every single one of those characters is in this film.
Spencer Smythe is the other option. Creator of the Spider-Slayers robots specifically engineered to hunt Spider-Man. An expert in spider biology and robotics. The voiceover’s specific knowledge of arachnid transformation would fit him too.
It might not matter which one he is yet. Both characters are setup villains. Both seed future storylines. If it’s the Jackal, we’re heading toward a Clone Saga. If it’s Smythe, Spider-Slayers are coming. Either way, Keith David’s character in Brand New Day isn’t meant to be fully solved by July 31. He’s the open door into the next film.
Man-Spider Is Not Just a Theory
Tom Holland said “catastrophic.” The trailer showed a cocoon. Peter wakes up covered in self-made webs inside his own apartment. Sony released a featurette titled “Day One on Set” showing Holland putting on the suit for the first time. In the background of that clip, on a production board barely visible for two seconds, there is a storyboard panel that fans screenshot and zoomed in on.
The panel clearly shows a multi-limbed figure in the Spider-Man suit position. Not two arms, its Six. Man-Spider. It’s in the production storyboard.
Sony hasn’t confirmed it. They also haven’t denied it. The storyboard panel hasn’t been officially addressed. But it’s there, visible, in their own behind-the-scenes footage. That’s not a fan theory. That’s Sony accidentally putting evidence of Man-Spider into their own promotional material.
New Villains: The Hand and Tombstone Explained
The Hand are ancient ninja assassins who use dark magic and can resurrect their dead members. They operated in Daredevil and The Defenders on Netflix. Now they’re in a Spider-Man film fighting Peter inside a prison and on rooftops across New York. Their presence likely sets up Daredevil: Born Again Season 3.
Tombstone is Lonnie Lincoln. Marvin Jones III plays him in live action after voicing him in the animated Spider-Verse film the same actor bridging both worlds. Tombstone has near-indestructible skin that withstands bullets and heat up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. He’s a crime boss filling the power vacuum left by Wilson Fisk after Born Again.
His skin is stronger than Fisk’s. His reach is city-wide. And he’s being positioned as the overarching trilogy villain not just a Brand New Day problem. He doesn’t appear in the trailer at all. A villain powerful enough to be the series’ main antagonist doesn’t need to. He already owns the city. Spider-Man just doesn’t know it yet.
